SCAR

REVISION

Scars consist of fibrous tissue that are part of the body’s natural healing mechanism. They can result from previous surgeries or procedures, trauma, acne, medications, or other skin conditions.

Portland plastic surgeon Deniz Gerecci MD has multiple tools and techniques available to help improve the appearance of scars. A scar can be revised surgical or non-surgically, depending on the specific characteristics of the scar. The goal is to create a more cosmetically pleasing appearance, as no treatment can remove a scar completely.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR SCAR REVISION?

Good candidates for scar revision include individuals who:

  • are unhappy about the appearance of their scars but have realistic expectations about scar improvement

  • have specific characteristics of the scar that can be improved: color, texture, orientation, irregularity, depression, etc.

  • have enough time since the initial scar formation (usually scar revisions are performed no earlier than 6 months - 1 year, although some intermediate interventions can be performed earlier

HOW IS SCAR REVISION PERFORMED?

Dr. Gerecci  will evaluate each patient and discuss the individual options for scar revision. The approach for revision depends on a number of factors and there are multiple treatments available. Some scars need to be surgically excised and re-sutured. Some can be treated with steroid injections, silicone sheeting, microneedling, dermabrasion, chemical peel, laser, or even fillers. Oftentimes a combination of techniques over multiple sessions is recommended. All procedures are done in office and can be performed under local anesthesia.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER SCAR REVISION TREATMENT

Your recovery will depend on the type of treatment performed. Following your procedure, Dr. Gerecci will see the patient in clinic and check all treatment areas and go over all wound care measures. Dependent on the approach taken, the patient may experience minimal swelling and downtime. Usually a combination of a medical grade silicone gel and SPF 30+ is recommended to use as the area heals.

ARE THERE NON-SURGICAL ALTERNATIVES TO SCAR REVISION?

Yes, many! Scars can be treated with steroid injections, silicone gel sheeting, microneedling, dermabrasion, chemical peel, laser, or even fillers. Oftentimes a combination of techniques over multiple sessions is recommended.
